Pasja kuga je zelo nalezljiva sistemska virusna bolezen psov, ki prizadene celoten organizem. Povzroča jo Morbillivirus, ki se nahaja v vseh izločkih bolne živali. Prenaša se kapljično – z neposrednim stikom ali po zraku. Širijo ga lahko tudi ljudje, ki imajo stik z okuženim psom. Zbolijo lahko psi vseh starosti, najpogosteje pa se pojavi pri mladičih, starih od 3 do 6 mesecev. Pogine okoli osemdeset odstotkov mladičev, ki se z njo okužijo, pri odraslih psih pa je smrtnost približno petdeset odstotna.
Ko virus vdre v psa, se najprej razmnožuje v limfatičnem tkivu dihalnega trakta. Nato se širi v kri in tam nadaljuje z razmnoževanjem, kar privede do infekcije vseh limfatičnih organov (vranica, bezgavke …), sledi infekcija dihalnega, prebavnega in urogenitalnega epitela ter centralnega živčnega sistema, kjer se virus naprej razmnožuje, kar povzroči bolezen.
Klinični znaki
Inkubacijska doba (čas od okužbe do izbruha bolezni) običajno traja med 14 in 18 dni. Po okužbi pride do prehodne vročine: vročina se najprej pojavi in traja od tri do šest dni (zaradi kratkega obdobja jo lahko tudi spregledamo), nato izgine in se šele čez več dni ponovno pojavi ter običajno traja manj kot en teden. Spremljajo jo lahko sluzast izcedek iz nosu, gnojni izcedek iz oči ter izguba apetita, ki jim lahko sledijo prebavne in dihalne težave (pes težko diha, kašlja, pojavita se lahko tudi driska in bruhanje) - te včasih prerastejo v bakterijsko infekcijo. Možen je tudi pojav encefalomielitisa (vnetja možganskih open), hiperkeratoze blazinic in smrčka (plast roževine na blazinicah in smrčku se zadebeli), mišičnih ali celo epileptiformnih krčev, pareze ali paralize, ki se pogosto začne na zadnjih nogah in se kaže kot nezmožnost premikanja.
Diagnoza
Postavimo jo na osnovi kliničnih znakov.
Zdravljenje
Protivirusno zdravilo za pasjo kugo ne obstaja. Uporabimo antibiotike širokega spektra za zaščito pred sekundarnimi bakterijskimi infekcijami in podporno terapijo z infuzijami tekočin, elektrolitov, vitaminov in prehranskih dodatkov. Zgodnje zdravljenje je zelo pomembno.
Preventiva
Najboljša zaščita pred pasjo kugo je cepljenje. Mladiče prvič cepimo v starosti med 6 in 8 tednov in ga ponovimo pri starosti 10 do 12 tednov. Primerno raven protiteles nato vzdržujemo z letnim cepljenjem.
Pri mladičih je poleg cepljenja pomembno tudi izogibanje kontaktu z okuženimi živalmi. Zato je priporočljivo, da do drugega cepljenja (pri približno dvanajstih tednih) pes ne prihaja v stik z drugimi psi in se ne zadržuje na krajih, kjer se zbira večje število psov.
V primeru, da smo imeli psa, ki je poginil zaradi pasje kuge, je dobro pred nakupom novega psa stanovanje temeljito razkužiti. Virus uniči večina dezinficiensov in detergentov.
