Kastracija je poseg, pri katerem mačku (samcu) odstranimo testise. Z njo preprečimo razmnoževanje, mački pa se zaradi izgube spolnih hormonov nekoliko umirijo.
Spremembe po kastraciji
Spolno zreli samci se zaradi iskanja samic potepajo naokoli, označujejo in branijo svoj teritorij ter se tepejo za izbrano samico. Pri tem prihaja tudi do ran in ugrizov, ki so najpogostejši viri okužb z mačjim aids-om (FIV – Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) ali levkozo (FeLV - Feline Leukemia Virus).
S kastracijo odstranimo testise, ki so vir spolnih hormonov, zato se tak maček najraje zadržuje doma, se nekoliko poleni in je bolj igriv. S tem se tudi izogne mnogim pretepom in posledično prej omenjenim okužbam. Vseeno pa se lahko zgodi, da jo kdaj skupi, saj nekateri še vedno zahajajo ven, vendar bliže doma in za krajši čas. Mačkone, ki živijo samo v stanovanju, kastriramo zato, da preprečimo markiranje z urinom.
Najprimernejši čas za kastracijo
Najbolje je kastracijo opraviti, ko je maček star okoli šest mesecev. Takrat je namreč že dovolj razvit, da dobro prenaša narkozo in hkrati ni še povsem spolno dozorel, zato se neželeno vedenje (in s tem možnost okužbe s FIV ali FeLV) še ne pojavi.
Pri kastraciji starejšega mačka se včasih zgodi, da njegov nagon kljub vsemu ostane. Zato muc še vedno (iz navade) zahaja ven, markira svoj teritorij (tudi v stanovanju) in se zapleta v pretepe.
Pred posegom
Maček mora biti tešč (12 ur prej ne sme jesti), saj se lahko pri prehodu v anestezijo pojavita slabost in bruhanje. Če ni tešč, lahko izbljuvke vdihne in se z njimi zaduši ali dobi pljučnico (zaradi hrane, ki zaide v pljuča).
Kastracija
Poseg poteka v splošni anesteziji in traja okoli 20 minut, maček pa mora pri veterinarju ostati okoli tri ure, da prespi in prediha narkozo.
V moda naredimo dve drobni luknjici skozi kateri potegnemo testisa, ju odstranimo ter rano pošpricamo z antibiotičnim sprejem (preventivno, da se ne pojavi vnetje). Poleg tega dobi tudi injekcijo antibiotika. Rane se zarastejo v roku 7 do 10 dni.
Ker mački med narkozo ne zaprejo oči, jih namažemo s posebno kremo, ki prepreči, da bi se izsušile. Zato ima muc po posegu nekoliko mastne oči.
Po posegu
Muc naj še 6 do 8 ur po posegu ne je, ker bi mu lahko postalo slabo. Na večer po posegu mu lahko ponudite vodo. Naslednji dan po operaciji lahko že normalno je in počne stvari, ki mu ustrezajo.

Pozdravljeni. Imam mlado muco, ki je prišla k naši hiši. Ne pusti se prijeti. Rada bi jo dala sterilizirati, ker imamo že 3 svoje muce. Zapuščene (divje) mačke lovijo s kletko živolovko. Zgleda takole.
Če mačko lahko zvabiš v zaboj ali kletko, bo to zanjo še najmanj stresno. Takšen način lovljenja divjih mačk je povsem običajen postopek tudi v tujini.
