Poseg je mogoč pri obeh spolih. Pri kastraciji samčku odstranimo testise, pri samički pa najprej naredimo okoli 2 cm dolg rez na trebuhu ter nato skozenj odstranimo jajčnike. Pri obeh posegih je žival v splošni anesteziji. Obnašanje se samčku po kastraciji ne spremeni (če je bil npr. pred njo agresiven, bo tak tudi ostal).
V primeru, da je edini namen kastracije/sterilizacije ta, da samček in samička, ki živita skupaj, nimata mladičkov, svetujem kastracijo, saj je poseg enostavnejši. Čeprav je potrebno povedati, da je kastracija pri morskem prašičku zahtevnejša od kastracije mačke oz. psa. Pujsek je namreč precej manjši in zato občutljivejši na anestezijo. Ima pa tudi drugačno anatomsko zgradbo - odprt ingvinalni kanal, kar pomeni, da moda lahko prehajajo med trebušno votlino in modnikom.
Včasih se lastniki odločijo raje za sterilizacijo (četudi imajo doma le samičko), saj se s tem prepreči (morebiten) nastanek tumorjev ali cist na jajčnikih.
Rada pa bi poudarila, da vsak kirurški poseg v anesteziji predstavlja določeno tveganje. Po operaciji se lahko pojavi vnetje rane, zato je higiena kletke po posegu še posebej pomembna. Za podlago v tem času uporabite plenično podlogo ali papirnato brisačko (ne žaganja ali sena). Prvi dan je potrebno tudi paziti, da prašička ne zebe. Hranite ga kot običajno.
Rana se ponavadi povsem zaceli po 10-14 dneh, šivi pa nekoliko kasneje odpadejo sami.

Ali nosijo ljudje na rezanje tudi dihurje? V tujini so popularni kot domače živali že celo večnost, v Sloveniji pa nisem še dobil občutka, da bi se prijemali.

Tudi dihurje steriliziramo/kastriramo. Res pa je, da jih ni prav veliko, vendar jih sem pa tja tudi kdo prinese. Opazam pa, da stevilo dihurjev narasca.

Samček mora biti star vsaj 4 mesece in težek 600-1000g, težji kot je, bolje je.

Kunca smo kastrirali.Po kolikšnem času se bo nehal goniti? Radi bi sterilizirali tudi kunčico.Večina jih pravi, da je to tvegan poseg.Kolikšna je nevarnost da kunčica umre med operacijo? Se je pri vas že zgodila ta nezgoda?

Jaz pa sem novopečena lastnica belega dihurja - samčka. Je cepljen in čipiran za kastracijo pa se vzreditelj ni odločil. Sama se nagibam h kastraciji, žal pa ne morem nikjer izvedeti “primernega” časa zanjo - oziroma, nekje sem prebrala, da je treba z njo počakati, dokler “nos” zdrži. Zdaj je mladič star 3 mesece.
Vem, da vprašanje ne sodi pod temo kastracija morskega prašiška, a žal ga nima kam “obesiti”. Hm, hm, lastniki dihurjev smo malo zapostavljeni!
Sicer pa, gospa Nika, mislim, da ste v ambulanti spoznala mojo muco.

Koliko mora biti stara samička, da jo lahko damo sterilizirati? Mladička je že imela (pred tremi dnevi). Radi bi obdržali mamico in mladička, ki pa je samček.

@jasna: Morski prašiček, pri katerem bi želeli opraviti sterilizacijo ali kastracijo mora biti star vsaj 4 mesece in tehtati vsaj 650 g. Če bosta živela skupaj je bolje opraviti poseg pri samčku, ker je enostavneje in je možnih manj komplikacij. Če bi se odločila za to možnost, bosta morala biti začasno ločena. Ločiti jih je treba, ko je mladiček star tri tedne.
